I'm running a short story competition for UK residents via MJMeads.com, just as a test for a more serious and structured competition to follow later in the year. I'm giving out a few prizes from my own pocket so any help in spreading the word would be appreciated.
As we've just begun a New Year, the theme for your stories should be 'New Beginnings'. You can interpret the theme however you wish and it can be central to the plot, or it can merely reflect the introduction or conclusion of the story.
Congratulations to the following authors and their short stories which have been shortlisted to win the competition:
Venetian Class - Rachel Heatherly
Half past nine, again? - Evie Mundy
Square One - Cara Nicholson
Stargazing with the Green Man - Lynne Voyce
Shortlisted entrants have also been contacted by email. If you were longlisted but failed to make the shortlist and would like some feedback on why you were unsuccessful, please contact me by email. Please note the new date for announcing the winner of Sunday 15th May.
The deadline for entries has now passed. Any entries received from now on will not be read, nor be eligible for a prize. Due to the large number of high-quality entries an initial 'long list' will be posted on this page on 16th April, then the final shortlist will be announced as promised on 30th April, at which point those authors will be contacted individually. Please note the NEW date of Sunday 15th May for announcing an overall winner.

There was a great response to this competition and plenty of interesting entries, so thanks to everyone who took part. After canvassing opinion on the providing of feedback I have decided that I will only consider offering feedback to the long-listed entries and then only on a case by case basis.
Story Theme: New Beginnings.
Word Count: Min 1500 – Max 2500 words.
Participants: All ages welcome, UK residents only.
Closing Date: 31st March 2016
Please Note: Previously unpublished stories only.
The initial shortlist will be drawn up by MJ Meads, then the winner will be selected by a panel of authors and book lovers chaired by MJ Meads. The judging panel's decision is final.
HOW TO ENTER:
Entry to this competition is now closed.
The closing date for entries is 31st March 2016.
A long-list will be announced on 16th April. The final shortlist will be announced on 30th April at which point the individual authors will be contacted.
The winner and any runners-up will be announced on 15th May.
There will be one overall winner and between one and three runners-up prizes on offer. Prizes will take the form of books from Amazon.co.uk, either electronic (Kindle) or hard copies, with the winner choosing books to the value of £30 and the runners up £10 each. I hope to be able to offer more lucrative prizes for the competition later in the year, once I can guarantee large numbers of high quality entries based on feedback from this first competition.
